INVITATION
Welcome to this special seminar taking place in the small town of Kitee, located in North Karelia, on the eastern edge of Finland! Kitee is internationally known as the birthplace and home spot of Nightwish, the most successful band of Finnish popular music export in history.
The seminar includes practice- and research-based presentations and discussions in an informal and cosy atmosphere, aimed both academic and general audiences, music and art fans of all kinds. The objective is to dig into the representations and characteristics of Finnish culture as it unfolds through various art forms, music in particular. The seminar is associated with the annual summer event Kitee International Music and Art Festival (KIMAF) and the research-focused Nordic Metal Music Seminar (organized in 2019 and 2021). www.kitee-festival.com
In addition to the seminar, visitors can attend a special Nightwish-themed tour to some local spots, guided by Plamen Dimov who has been entangled in many Nightwish activities from the early days of the band. Guests who are staying overnight can also enjoy informal mingling and activities in the school and the town. In sum, the event offers great company, conversations, and a chance to experience the October darkness in traditional Finnish surroundings.
The seminar is held in English and it takes place only live.

Toni-Matti Karjalainen
Toni-Matti Karjalainen works as Professor of Arts Management in Sibelius Academy at the University of the Arts Helsinki. He is also Adjunct Professor (Docent) of Music Management and Culture Export at Aalto University in Espoo, where he recently worked as Academy Research Fellow and Research Manager. Toni-Matti holds a Doctor of Arts degree in Art and Design. He has been visiting professor, lecturer, researcher, and reviewer in many universities around the world, has produced over one hundred academic and popular publications in different outlets, ranging from design and brand management to heavy metal music, and has organised conferences, seminars and events of different kinds. www.tonimattikarjalainen.info

Charlotte Doesburg
Charlotte Doesburg received her PhD from University College London (United Kingdom) in 2022. For her PhD, she researched the adaptation of the Kalevala and other folk poetry in Finnish metal music and its connections to Finnish national identity. She has published her research in many outlets, lectured in many universities, and presented her research at various international conferences. Charlotte received the ‘Best Presentation’-award from the British Federation of Women Graduates in 2021.

Mika Jussila, interviewed by Toni-Matti Karjalainen
Mika Jussila has 38 years of work as a mastering engineer at Finnvox Studios, projects mostly stylistically heavier music, total amount of mastered albums over 6000. It's no coincidence that his work has been successful worldwide because quality guaranteed. Celebrated as one of the best mastering engineers for metal music in the world, Mika is also known for his work as a professional photographer, mainly shooting bands live. Pekka Suutari
Pekka Suutari is ethnomusicologist and professor of cultural studies at the Karelian Institute, University of Eastern Finland. His main research interests have been minorities and popular music, i.e. how music activities can construct sense of minority belonging in the everyday life within certain political contexts. He is living in Joensuu with his family and the Karelian has returned to be his home language.

Dalva Lamminmäki
Dalva Lamminmäki is a PhD student in Folklore Studies at the University of Eastern Finland specializing in the study of folk healers and sauna culture in Finland. Metal head and active member of local metal club in Joensuu, North Karelia.

Pekka Kainulainen
Pekka Kainulainen is an artist of many ways of expression by drawings, paintings, and videos. He has realized several solo- and group exhibitions since 1978. He has taken part in international performance art festivals since 1997. Since 2007 he has been the lyricist of the Finnish heavy metal band Amorphis. In his expression ancient ages of the Kalevala is the deep well of inspiration.
